How to qualify an industrial supplier before selection

A practical supplier qualification framework covering technical fit, quality, capacity, cost, lead time, continuity and open checks.

A practical supplier qualification framework covering technical fit, quality, capacity, cost, lead time, continuity and open checks.

Technical fit

Confirm that the supplier actually uses a suitable process for the material, geometry, tolerance and production volume. Marketing claims are not a substitute for process evidence.

Quality evidence

Review the scope—not only the logo—of certifications. Clarify inspection equipment, traceability, control plans and relevant industry requirements.

Capacity and timing

Separate sample timing, first-production timing and repeat lead time. Ask how capacity is calculated and which operations are outsourced.

Commercial fit

Clarify MOQ, tooling ownership, setup charges, packaging, payment terms and the assumptions behind the quoted price.

Open checks

A strong qualification report makes unresolved points visible so they can be validated before nomination.
