How to qualify an industrial supplier before selection

A practical supplier qualification framework covering technical fit, quality, capacity, cost, lead time, continuity and open checks.

Technical fit

Confirm the supplier actually uses a suitable process for the material, geometry, tolerance and production volume. Marketing claims are not a substitute for process evidence.

Quality evidence

Check the scope—not just the logo—of certifications. Clarify inspection equipment, traceability, control plans and any industry-specific requirements.

Capacity and timing

Separate sample timing, first production timing and repeat lead time. Ask how capacity is calculated and which operations are outsourced.

Commercial fit

Clarify MOQ, tooling ownership, setup charges, packaging, payment terms and the assumptions behind the quoted price.

Open checks

A good qualification report does not pretend uncertainty has disappeared. It makes unresolved points visible so they can be validated before nomination.
